Abstract
A recent investigation has suggested that delayed hypersensitivity reactions commonly develop during topical 5‐FU therapy and imply that the mechanism of action of 5‐FU may involve destruction of actinic keratoses by a nonspecific immunological reaction. We evaluated a 1% and a 5% formulation of 5‐FU in the Kligman maximization procedure for inducing contact sensitization and were unable to induce contact allergy to 5‐FU. On the basis of these experiments, we conclude that contact allergy to 5‐FU is unlikely to be as common as suggested by others. Keywords
