Abstract
It is argued that delays through gigabit networks are dominated by propagation delay, so communications techniques and protocols for megabit networks would be inefficient or ineffective for gigabit networks. The latency-bandwidth tradeoff for gigabit networks is discussed, and an example of it is presented. It is concluded that gigabit networks have forced network designers to deal with propagation delays due to the finite speed of light.Keywords
