Abstract
Specification of engineering controls for volatile solvents lost from paints and other surface coatings often requires estimation of the evolution rates of individual compounds. An experimental method was developed for measuring the rate of loss of individual volatile species from coated surfaces as a function of time. A range of valid operating conditions was established. Preliminary experiments using shellac on a plywood substrate indicate that air velocity over the surface determined the maximum rates of evolution early in drying. The time required for 90% loss of the major solvent was a function of air velocity and coating thickness. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
