Abstract
The effect of topical betamethasone-17-valerate on collagen biosynthesis in skin was studied in patients with psoriasis. The skin specimens, taken from both lesion and normal-looking skin, were incubated in a medium containing 14C-proline and the rate of 14C-hydroxyproline formation was taken as an index of collagen biosynthesis. 10-day treatment decreased the rate of collagen formation in the lesion, whereas in normal-looking skin, no effect was detectable. The findings may have relevance to the local side-effects, such as atrophy of the skin, produced by fluorinated corticosteroids. Keywords
