Abstract
Spore assemblages are described from coals and shales collected at 45 horizons within the Coal Measures sequence exposed at Wernddu claypit, near Caerphilly, South Wales. The changes in the composition of the microfloras of Westphalian shales are related to those known to occur in assemblages isolated from coals. Particular attention has been paid to the vertical ranges of the spores, and 35 species are recognized as of special stratigraphical value. Comparisons are made with the spore distributions in neighbouring parts of South Wales and other British coalfields. Recent accounts of the microfloras from Northern Hemisphere continents are briefly reviewed.
