Effects of Angiotensin on Blood Pressure and Renal Function in Pregnant and Non-Pregnant Rats

Abstract
The effect of intraperitoneal injections of angiotensin II (100 µg/kg) was examined in pregnant and non-pregnant control rats. The initial blood pressure was higher in the pregnant than in the control animals, but the pregnant rats exhibited a smaller rise in blood pressure in response to angiotensin II. Angiotensin produced a natriuresis in both groups of animals but caused a significant rise in glomerular filtration rate in control animals and a significant fall in glomerular filtration rate in pregnant rats. It is suggested that the differential effect of angiotensin on systemic and renal vascular resistance is altered by pregnancy.
