Abstract
Rats were adapted to a 48-hr. water-deprivation schedule, and then given successive periods of deprivation varying from 24 to 96 hr. Heart rate, measured when water was made available, was essentially equivalent after all levels of deprivation. In another study, heart rate and bar-press rate were recorded during drinking after various periods of deprivation. Results indicated that both responses may be affected by activity and physical weakening, and that learning may affect heart rate in such experiments.
