Abstract
SUMMARY Some properties of the pro-oestrogen, methylethylstilboestrol (4:4′-dihydroxy-α-methyl-β-ethylstilbene), have been studied in intravaginal tests with ovariectomized mice, using diethylstilboestrol as control. The results show that the slope is steeper and cornification occurs later with the pro-oestrogen, while correlation between the responses of individual mice to the two substances is small. In all these respects, the behaviour of the intravaginally-administered pro-oestrogen resembles that of an injected oestrogen. These results were computed using three methods—the angular transformation, (0 or 1) scoring and (0, 1 or 2) scoring as explained in the text. They demonstrate the advantages of the two last methods, brought out particularly by the presence of heterogeneity between mice. Although the angular transformation has advantages over the probit transformation in quantal tests, these simple scoring and analytical techniques have even greater advantages and may be used with ease in complex designs.
