Abstract
An electrophoretic method for the analysis of neutral polysaccharides was described. It is suggested that the method has a general application to soluble polysaccharide material. Borate buffer at pH 9.2 is used and the polysaccharides in this solution move toward the anode. Borate buffer is essential for analysis even with polysaccharides containing only trans-vicinal hydroxyl groups. This indicates a combination of borate with this type of polysaccharide. Yeast mannan, ivory nut mannan and rabbit liver glycogen show no indication of any other molecular species when analyzed electrophoretically. Yeast glycogen and starches show the presence of at least 2 components. Keywords
