THE DEVELOPMENT OF EARLY MOUSE EMBRYOS IN THE EXTRAEMBRYONIC COELOM OF THE CHICK

Abstract
A method for extended study of post-implantation stages of mammals was developed in which 7 to 8 day mouse embryos were transplanted into 72-80-hr. chick embryos in such a way that they came to lie in the extraembryonic coelom. Primitive streak stages (7 day) transplanted to the chick by this method developed within 48 hrs. into typical 9-day embryos which were small but looked normal. Other 8-day embryos continued development to 9 or 10 days.
