Studies in Colloidal Behaviour and Absorption Spectra of Azoxine S Dyes

Abstract
The colloidal nature of 7-Phenylazo-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid (A) and 7- (4-Sulphophenylazo) -8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid (B) in aqueous solution has been established by electrical conductance measurements. The curves obtained by plotting the square-root of concentration and molar conductance of the dyes are not linear. The temperature coefficient per degree centigrade per hundred units of conductance at 35° is below 2.0 in each case. The temperatures of zero conductance, determined by extrapolation are -20 and -25° in the dyes (A) and (B) respectively. The absorption spectra of eleven azoxine S dyes in acidic, alkaline and at pH ~4 have been studied and their molar absorptivities at absorption maxima determined.
