Abstract
The word epidemiology is derived from the Greek meaning ‘studies upon people' (1) and is defined by Morris (2) as: The study of health and disease of populations and of groups in relation to their environment and ways of living.' The foundations of epidemiology were laid in the mid 19th century, when work was particularly concerned with the distribution, determinants, spread and prevention of infectious diseases and ultimately led to public health legislation and social reform (3).
