Abstract
This paper is focused on the development of a theoretical model of social role reconstructuring, a further elaboration of previous work done by Bengtson and Kuypers. The novel input of the suggested model is an intervention strategy that interposes at the stage of susceptability BEFORE the breakdown syndrome begins. The model depends on the development of new roles to provide role continuity, satisfaction, enhanced self-concept, and new social support systems. The relevancy of the new theoretical model is illustrated by references to data from a longitudinal study of older volunteers.
