Comparison of Energy Expenditure of Children Measured With Two Types of Apparatus

Abstract
Because the study of the energy expenditure of children engaged in a variety of activities necessitates the use of different types of apparatus, measurements were carried out with the respiration chamber, which measures CO2 production, and the field respiration apparatus, which measures 02 consumption, to evaluate the correspondence of the results. The subjects were 9-ll-yr.-old boys and girls sitting and drawing and girls of the same age sitting and sewing. In all cases the energy expenditure expressed in terms of Calories/kg. body wt./hr. was slightly higher in the respiration chamber than when using the field respiration apparatus. In terms of Calories/cm. height/hr. the same held true with one exception, that of the girls sitting sewing, where the results were identical. The differences were so small as to warrant the conclusion that for activities such as drawing and sewing measurement of either CO2 production or O2 consumption is satisfactory.
