Abstract
The purpose of the present research is to study the composition of the essential oil of Artemisia thuscula Cav. (syn. A. canariensis (Bess.) Lessing), an endemic plant of the Canary Archipelago, and to verify the variations with relation to the phenologic conditions and ecological characteristics of the stations. The samples (leaves and flowers) were collected in the period of flowering at various stations: Puerto de la Cruz, Val Tejina and Tamaimo, in the island of Tenerife, and near the city of Valverde in the island of Hierro. The oils, which were obtained by hydrodistillation in 1.5–2.2% yield, were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Although 45 constituents were identified in the oils, those produced from plants harvested in Tenerife were found to be rich in davanone (38.0–62.3%), while camphor (36.7%) was the predominant component of the oil from Hierro Valverde. Keywords
