Abstract
Branched long-chain fatty acids formerly unidentified in natural glycerides were isolated from butterfat. Two C17 methyl branched-chain fatty acids isomeric with normal heptadecanoic acid were shown to be present in butterfat. Based solely on the melting point evidence of branched-chain fatty acids as presented by Cason (1948), one of the 2 C17 fatty acids isolated (m.p. 54.4[degree]) appears to be the iso acid, while the other (m.p. 39.8[degree]) appears to be the anteiso acid.
