UTILISATION DE LA BETTERAVE «DANOISE » DANS L'ALIMENTATION DU PORC EN CROISSANCE. II.- VARIATIONS DU PLAN DE RATIONNEMEi\T ET DU POIDS D'ABATTAGE

Abstract
Possibility of increasing the proportion of total intake supplied by fodder beet during the finishing period was studied. Four groups of 9 and 11 large white pigs of initial liveweight 30 kg were given fodder beet to appetite, 350 g of a protein concentrate with 47 g crude protein and I 600 g barley daily up to 60 kg liveweight. From 60 kg the daily allowance of barley remained at I 600 g or was reduced to I 200 g, and pigs were killed at 90 or 110 kg. When the fattening period was lengthened from 90 to 110 kg there was an increase in total intake of beet of the order of 80%. Average daily gain and intake per kg gained were not significantly affected, nor was quality of the carcass; absolute yield of meat increased with slaughter weight. The reduction of barley from I 600 to I 200 g daily after 60 kg liveweight gave only a small increase in the daily intake of fodder beet, and as a result intake of dry matter decreased considerably, with a corresponding reduction in growth rate. These effects were more marked in the pigs killed at 90 kg. Quality of carcass was improved, but at the cost of an increase in feed per unit gained. On the other hand, for the pigs killed at 110 kg the reduction of the amount of barley during the finishing period had little effect on carcass quality or feed per unit gained.
