Abstract
The minimum inhibiting concentrations of rifamycin-SV and 11 other antibiotics were compared on 282 strains of penicillinase producing staphylococci. Rifamycin-SV is active against these organisms at concentrations lower than the other antibiotics. It also exerts a very high activity against enterococci, while it is relatively inactive against gram-negative organisms (381 strains). The bactericidal concentrations of rifamycin-SV are either very close or equal to the bacterio-static concentrations. Its activity is influenced by the incubation time, pH of the medium and the inoculum size, but not by the presence of serum. The in vitro induced resistance to rifamycin SV was studied.
