Abstract
“A Perspective on Form and Experience” is an introspective effort by a practicing composer regarding both what it means to be a composer and how the formal design of contemporary musical works can reflect more meaningfully the daily lives of contemporary individuals. Beginning with two perspectives, the composer as performer and the contrasting behaviors of the “maker” and the “searcher” (terms defined in the article), the paper goes on to explore the origins of narrative form and later what is called “revelatory form.” Traditional variation technique is contrasted with the author's extension, the “transformational mosaic.” The overall discussion proceeds against a background of detailed consideration of the composition Archipelago, commissioned by IRCAM (1981–83).Keywords
