Abstract
This study examined predictors of school placement for children with special needs. Data was gathered and summarized on the 205 preschool children who attended a special unit at the Child Study Centre of Western Australia over an 8 year time span. It also investigated the relationship between child, home, and unit‐related variables and placement on leaving the unit. A factorial analysis produced six principal factors which related to the nature of placement decisions. These factors can be interpreted in terms of severity of disability, quality of relationships, age at entering and leaving the unit, family type and family health. Keywords
