Abstract
To the Editor: Bogardus et al. (July 10 issue)1 concluded that the resting metabolic rate is a familial trait. This conclusion was based on their observation that most of the variance in the resting metabolic rate (83 percent) was accounted for by three covariates—fat-free mass, age, and sex. An additional 11 percent of the variance was accounted for by family membership. It is unfortunate that Bogardus et al. related the resting metabolic rate to the fat-free mass and not to the body cell mass, which is the component of the body responsible for all of the resting metabolic rate.2 The . . .Keywords
