Abstract
Comparison of the oxidation of the 1-carbon vs the 6-carbon of glucose in hyperthyroid and hypothyroid rats was carried out by monitoring expired C14O2 following injection of specifically labeled glucose. Results suggest that whereas in the hyperthyroid animal the rate of oxidation of both the C-1 and C-6 carbon of glucose are increased to approximately the same extent, removal of the thyroid hormones leads to a proportionally greater reduction in rate of oxidation of the C-l carbon. Thus it appears probable that in the euthyroid animal the rate of oxidation of the carbon-1 of glucose (presumably reflecting rate of oxidation via the phosphogluconate pathway) is under the influence of the thyroid gland. Keywords
