The Risk of Institutionalization Before Death

Abstract
The risk of institutionalization before death was estimated in a follow-up study of 521 persons who were initially interviewed in 1965 and who died before January 1975. We were successful in reconstructing long-term care histories for 455 individuals. Of these, 39% stayed at least once in a nursing home or convalescent hospital before death; 15% had stays of six months or more. Multiple discriminant analysis was used to examine associations between risk of institutionalization and selected variables.
