Abstract
The lobe was shaken off at the 2-cell stage. It contains no chromatin, but nevertheless undergoes a series of changes in form simulating lobe formation in the preceding stages of the egg. Whether these autonomous changes represent a repetition of lobe formation, or progressive changes such as the lobe would have undergone had it remained as a part of the egg, is discussed. The conclusion is reached that the latter is the more probable interpretation.
