PERINATAL MORTALITY

Abstract
Perinatal mortality is a relatively new term. In 1948, Peller1felt that there was such a close association between fetal death ratios and neonatal mortality rates that he suggested their combination into a "perinatal mortality rate." Baumgartner and Erhardt2have reiterated the validity of this concept. The World Health Organization Expert Committee on Health Statistics in 19503recommended that the fetal death and neonatal mortality statistics be published alongside of each other so that they could be considered as a unit. Davis, Potter, and Bruce4referred to perinatal mortality as an inclusive term to include stillbirth and neonatal mortality. Obstetricians should think of perinatal mortality as expressing loss of life just before, during, or just after birth, since these are areas of prime obstetric responsibility.
