Melibiose Broth for Classifying Yeasts

Abstract
If 3% raffinose broth is fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. ellipsoideus and the melibiose broth remaining is concentrated to half-volume and resterilized in fermentation tubes, one can use these to obtain a differentiation of melibiose and non-melibiose fer-menters in 7-8 days, in contrast to the 3 weeks or more necessary with Wickerham''s method, or the 2-3 weeks necessary when using the unconcentrated melibiose broth prepd. from raffinose. In a critical review of the nomenclature of the ascosporogenous yeast genus variously referred to as Torula, Cryptococcus and Torulopsis, the authors give reasons for preferring the genus name Cryptococcus. Two new combinations, Cryptococcus fermentans (Torulopsis f. Mrak and Mc-Clung) and C. dactylifera (T. d. Mrak, Pfaff and Vaughn) are made.
