Excited States inCo59andFe56

Abstract
The energy-level scheme of Co59 has been investigated through studies of inelastic proton scattering. An electrostatic accelerator and a high-resolution magnetic spectrograph were used. The region of excitation studied ranged from the ground state to 3.6 Mev, and in this region forty excited states were found. A number of alpha-particle groups were observed to result from the proton bombardment of cobalt targets, and these were identified as arising from the Co59(p, α)Fe56 reaction. The ground-state Q value for this reaction was measured as 3.242±0.008 Mev.
