Abstract
The substitutes for leadership construct developed by Kerr and Jermier (1978) is shown to contain four distinct, competing models of the effects of leaders and situations on subordinate outcomes: moderators, suppressors, supplements, and true substitutes. Statistical rationale and specific criteria are developed and tested for detecting each model. Keywords
