Orderly Maps and Map Communication

Abstract
Map communication should be considered from both the cartographer's and the map reader's points of view. Better map communication will require that cartographers be not only familiar with mapping technology but also aware of the needs and abilities of map readers. Experimental evidence is presented here that map readers assume a particular order of importance among the various map elements, e.g., the body, title, legend, source, etc., but that a corresponding visual hierarchy in the lettering sizes on the map reinforces that hierarchy. Providing the map reader with a more orderly map, then, should increase the probability of successful map communication.
