Abstract
During the period, 1933 to 1942 inclusive, 69,451 cases of poliomyelitis were reported and approx. 7,800 deaths were registered. The largest number of cases reported in any one of the 10 yrs. was 10,839 in 1935 and the smallest number was 1,705 in 1938. The incidence of poliomyelitis during the yr. 1942 was relatively low, 4,167 cases being reported. The disease did not occur in widespread epidemic form in any part of the country in 1942, but rather in small localized outbreaks. The states reporting the largest number of cases were Illinois, New York, California, New Jersey, and Texas. However, the States with the highest rates of incidence per 100,000 population were Nebraska, Vermont, Arkansas, and Arizona. The epidemiological and exptl. studies which have been reported during the period covered by this series of reports (1933-42) have suggested certain revisions in the prevailing opinions regarding the portal of entry of the virus and the transmission of the disease in man. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
