Acoustical Burrows Constructed by Mole Crickets1, 2

Abstract
Males of Scapteriscus acletus Rehn and Hebard and S. vicinus Scudder call from burrows that open outward via an exponentially expanding horn. The horn arises from a bulb-like chamber connected by another chamber to the remainder of the tunnel system. Scapteriscus spp. calling burrows, like those of Gryllotalpa spp., probably increase the male's acoustical output. Since males of Scapteriscus spp. call with their tegmina in the bulb-like chamber while those of Gryllotalpa spp. call with their tegmina in the throat of the horn, different acoustical principles are evidently involved.
