Abstract
In the course of research into the function of the respiratory muscles in speech, evidence was produced showing that a system for measuring sub-gfottal (tracheal) pressure can be simply derived from suitable records of oesophageal pressures. The technique was used to investigate (a) the reaction times of speakers, (b) Stetson''s theory of the syllable. Provisional results do not support his contention that there is nearly always a peak of sub-glottal pressure corresponding to each syllable.
