Abstract
Hypnosis is operationally defined as an altered state of consciousness in which the individual transcends customary limits of neuromuscular control. A procedure for producing muscle fasciculations not ordinarily subject to volitional control is described. It is held that in autohypnosis and heterohypnosis this neuromuscular transcendency eliminates suspicion of simulation in both subject and hypnotist and facilitates further transcending. Theoretical and experimental implications are discussed.
