Abstract
The mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of the harvest mouse Micromys minutus were analyzed with several banding techniques. This species possesses an unusually high chromosome number for the subfamily Murinae. Approximately 32% of the karyotype consists of constitutive heterochromatin, which can be labeled with AT base pair-specific fluorochromes. In meiosis in males, the XY bivalent differs from most mammalian XY bivalents in that it has an exceptional trefoil-like pairing configuration. Banding analysis of the XY bivalent revealed that a very small euchromatic region near the centromere of the otherwise entirely heterochromatic Y chromosome pairs with a segment near the centromere in the long arm of the X chromosome. Keywords
