Abstract
Mechanisms of action of the KD have not been fully elucidated. However, scientific observations have determined the unlikely mechanisms, including acidosis, dehydration, and alteration of electrolytes. It is generally accepted that the direct effect of ketone bodies is not a likely mechanism, although some researchers have pointed out the structural similarity of the main ketone bodies to GABA.
