Plane Strain Tests on A Saturated Remoded Clay

Abstract
Specimens of saturated, remolded clay were Ko consolidated and subsequently sheared under undrained plane strain conditions. The angle of shearing resistance and the cu/σ'1c ratio was found to be slightly higher under plane strain conditions than the respective values obtained from corresponding standard triaxial tests. The results of both types of test suggest that the pore water pressure is controlled by the octrahedral stresses; the magnitude of the intermediate principal stress under plane strain conditions is considerably less than one-half the sum of the other two principal stresses.
