Abstract
This chapter reviews methods used to quantify ecological differences in the socio-economic status of areas, with reference to the literature on inequalities in health in Britain and elsewhere. It examines local variation in socio-economic characteristics near an industrial source, and presents an approach to the adjustment of socio-economic confounding at the small-area level. Keywords
