THE CHARACTERIZATION OF SPINODAL STRUCTURES IN DUPLEX CF3 STEELS

Abstract
Contingency tables, autocorrelation functions and a maximum likelihood method for estimating the amplitudes of composition fluctuations are applied to the study of the spinodal decomposition of a the ferritic component of a duplex stainless steel. The contingency tables are sensitive to the partitioning of alloying elements in this multi-component steel. Aged and unaged alloys could be more clearly distinguished using the autocorrelation function than using the composition profiles, but an accurate determination of the wavelength of the spinodal could not be made. The estimate of the amplitude of the spinodal using a maximum likelihood method was found to be suitable for parameterizing the decomposition
