Abstract
Evidence from an in‐depth study of a local careers service reveals major weaknesses in the links between schools and the careers service. Careers officers are often marginalised to such an extent that it undermines the quality of careers guidance they can deliver to pupils. Unfortunately, Government plans for the reorganisation of the careers service, which will involve a major or possibly exclusive controlling role by Training and Enterprise Councils seem likely to divert attention away from the need for much closer working relationships between careers officers and teachers and for a careers service better integrated within our system of secondary school education.
