-Matrix Formalism for Level-Shift Calculations

Abstract
An exact formula for the level shift is given in terms of the adiabatic -matrix constructed from the perturbation which produces the shift. The formula is used to discuss the role of the subsidiary condition in quantum electrodynamic level-shift calculations.
