Abstract
Euthyroid, hyperthyroid and thyroidectomized female rats were starved to extremis. The O2 consumption of each group, measured daily, was found to decline an approximately equivalent amount during the early stages of starvation. This decrement of O2 consumption is thus independent of thyroid activity. Loss of specific dynamic action of food, lack of sufficient available substrate at the cellular level or other factors may be responsible. Investigation of the various possibilities is in process. Keywords
