Abstract
Observations were made on the behaviour of 16 pomacentrid coral reef fish living under natural conditions. On the basis of the habit recorded for the majority of individuals observed in each, the fish were divided into three groups (solitary, pairing and social). Correlations were established between coloration and behaviour. Six out of the 8 social species studied have patterns of black (or brown) and white (or yellow) dorso‐ventral stripes. All 6 of the solitary species have colours other than black, brown, grey‐green, and white. Keywords
