Abstract
The Jahn‐Teller energy accounts for only about one‐third of the quadrupole ordering energy in the rare‐earth pnictides. The main contribution to this energy comes from a combination of the electric quadrupole‐quadrupole interaction and the indirect coupling of quadrupoles via the conduction and anion electrons. Keywords
