Abstract
The inheritance of 2 carboxylesterase alleles was studied in Culex pipiens L. Mosquitoes were inbred to produce lines homozygous for Esterase 5, Esterase 7 , and a null allele, which proved to be alleles at a single locus. The null allele was recessive to the esterase alleles, which were inherited as codominants. The esterases were inherited independently of sex and of markers in the 2nd linkage group but showed 0.101±0.033 recombination with plum-eye in female heterozgotes and 0.196±0.058 in males. plum-eye does not show linkage with sex or linkage group 2 markers, which suggests that Est 5, Est 7 and plum-eye are all in linkage group 3. The esterase enzymes studied here have not been previously described and are not associated with reduced viability. Keywords
