Abstract
It is suggested in this paper that the strength of twistless slivers is largely due to the locking into the structure of strain energy which cannot be released owing to friction between the fibres. It is found that the force exerted at each contact is a result of the frictional properties of the fibres only and that, as a consequence, the force needed to withdraw a fibre from such a sliver becomes a measure of fibre contacts. There are considerable discrepancies in the various estimates of the numbers of such contacts and a possible explanation for these discrepancies is suggested. Keywords
