Abstract
A sex pheromone of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), was isolated from 10,000 female moths. Whole bodies were homogenized With 1,2-dichloroethane. The extract was clarified by precipitation of inactive lipids at —70°C and chromatographed on successive silica gel columns. The active fractions were combined, and the sex pheromone was isolated by preparative gas-liquid chromatography. The pheromone is a strong electron captor, is nonsaponifiable, is soluble in polar organic solvents, and is highly stable at standard conditions. General observations were made on the biological characteristics of the pheromone. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
