LXXXV Psychologic Factors Influencing Vocal Rehabilitation of the Postlaryngectomy Patient

Abstract
Not all laryngectomy patients have adequate motivation for speech rehabilitation. A group of approximately 10% prefer to use the circumstances associated with not being able to speak as a means of fulfilling emotional needs related to fear, aggression, insecurity, masochism and self-pity. The prognosis in this group for satisfactory vocal rehabilitation through the use of esophageal voice, artificial larynx or air tunnel is poor.
