Needle Biopsy of the Liver

Abstract
THE increasing use of needle biopsy of the liver clearly indicates its wide acceptance as a clinical and investigative tool. More than 20,000 biopsies have been reviewed, and it is now possible to reassess the usefulness and limitations of the procedure.A few conclusions appear to be warranted. Needle biopsy is not necessary for correct diagnosis of most cases of liver disease. It is indispensable, however, in a small but important group.
