Studies on the Mechanism of Herbicidal Action of 2-Chloro-4,6-Bis(Ethylamino)-S-Triazine.

Abstract
The herbicide 2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino) -s-triazine (simazin) reduced the photochemical activity (Hill reaction) of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) chloroplasts by 50% at 4.6 x 10"[degree] [image]. Reduction of ferricyanide, which was used as the electron acceptor in the Hill reaction study, was measured potentiometrically. Glucose supplied to simazin-treated intact barley plants through severed leaf tips circumvented the phytotoxic action of the herbicide. These observations suggest that the toxic action of simazin may be due to interference with the photolytic step in photosynthesis.
