Experience in providing orthodontic treatment in England

Abstract
The demand for orthodontic treatment in England has increased over the past decade but there is still an 18% wastage of patients who do not complete treatment. The causes of this wastage are discussed. A method of oral hygiene assessment is described. Investigation of this assessment indicates that patients who are motivated to good oral hygiene become good orthodontic patients. It is suggested that oral hygiene assessment prior to orthodontic treatment is a good method of assessing patient motivation and may help to reduce the wastage resulting from failure to complete treatment.
